The Texas Armed Services Scholarship
Recently, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board opened applications for the Texas Armed Services Scholarship, an excellent opportunity for your seniors interested in a military pathway to receive up to $15,000 a year toward their cost of attendance in college. The scholarship is designed for students who plan to participate in a ROTC program while in college and who are willing to commit to a minimum of four years of service in a branch of the military upon graduation. Visit the website to check out additional eligibility requirements.
To receive this scholarship, students must be nominated by a member of the Texas Legislature. That’s easier than it sounds! Students don’t have to reside in the nominating legislator’s district. However, each elected official can only nominate one student per year. Elected officials can begin nominating students at the end of April. The nomination period closes at the end of August, so encourage your interested 12th graders to start reaching out today.
Before they contact any legislator, make sure your students have confirmed they’re eligible for this program. Students can either call or email the office of any Texas state legislator. Make sure they know to call state-level elected officials, not federal – here's a list of the Texas state senators and representatives. Also let them know that if they call, they’ll end up talking to a staffer rather than the actual member.
Here’s a short script they can use in their outreach:
Hi, my name is [full name] and I’m a Texas high school student graduating this spring from [name of school]. I’m calling to see if [Senator/ Representative last name] would be willing to nominate me for the Texas Armed Services Scholarship. This scholarship is for Texas students who plan to participate in an ROTC program at a Texas college and later serve in the armed forces. I will be attending [college name] in the fall and will participate in their ROTC program. After I graduate, I plan to commit to service in [military branch].
The [senator/ representative] can nominate one student per year for this program. That student does not need to live in their district. Is this something the [senator/ representative] would be interested in helping me with?
If so, they will need to nominate me by filling out some information on the website for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Here is the link: https://www1.thecb.state.tx.us/apps/Standard/Login/login.cfm
If the [senator/ representative] would like more information about this program, they can find it at www.hhloans.com.
If the legislator your student contacts has already nominated someone else, tell your student not to despair! They can continue contacting additional legislators – remember, they don’t have to reside or go to school in that elected official’s district.
